Summary
Out & Equal’s mission of LGBT workplace equality presents an unparalleled opportunity for the successful candidate to advance LGBT workplace equality by working with a highly successful organization that is experiencing rapid, yet structured growth as O&E becomes the leading nonprofit in the use of emergent technology to meet the needs of its constituents.
The position of Technology Director will provide a rare opportunity for shaping a fledgling program that enjoys early momentum and strong support from its Board and corporate constituents. This position will be responsible for working with staff and vendors to lead the organization’s technology and innovation into the next generation of learning by developing an integrated technology solution that will enable constituents from around the world to share best practices on LGBT workplace issues, connect with experts in the field, and locate content developed by both O&E and by individuals in the field.
Other duties include the implementation of O&E’s online CareerLink job posting site. The Technology Director will also serve as the lead staff for in-house technology related issues including answering technology related questions from staff, trouble shooting problems, and serving as liaison to our technology vendors.
The ideal candidate will have a wealth of experience with emergent Internet technologies. The candidate needs the vision to determine both current and future needs, as well as the strategic and practical skill to implement technology-based solutions to meet the needs of O&E’s diverse constituency. Candidate also must be able to work as a team with staff, vendors, and constituents in the development and implementation of technology-based projects.
The Technology Director will be a member of the senior management team and will work with the team to help set organizational priorities and implement processes that will improve our programs. This is a newly-created position, and the successful candidate will lead the organization’s technology and innovation into the next generation of learning. S/he will work closely with our directors and staff to ensure the organization’s short-term Web 2.0 and long-term Web 3.0 strategy and vision.
Responsibilities
- Develop and implement the organization’s technical strategy and vision, which includes providing overall strategic direction.
- Participation in industry events and conferences
- Demonstrate an understanding of technology transfer, licensing, and commercialization activities.
- Manage department budget.
- Steward the development of technical skills for staff.
- Integration of existing programs, e.g. CareerLink and CollectiveX
Technical Skills
Candidates must have in-depth experience, knowledge, and interest in emergent Internet-based technologies. Experience in the following areas is required to succeed in the position:
- Content, Knowledge and Learning Management Platforms, Tools and Systems Integration
- Web 1.0 and Web 2.0 integration and architectural re-design
- Streamlining multi-point communication
- Utilizing online networks to provide resources
- Social Networking Platforms/Instruments, including eConferences, Virtual Classroom, podcasts,Blogs/Weblogs via multiple technologies and devices (e.g., pc, mobile/telecom devices)
- Internet Software Development, including Services Oriented architecture (SOA) methods
- Manage technical relationships with different vendors
- Basic maintenance of equipment and systems
- Current and emerging 3D Virtual Worlds, and 3D Web (Web 3.0), such as Active Worlds, Second Life (desired)
Personal Skills and Attributes
- Analytical and critical thinker with attention to detail who regularly seeks innovative solutions to complex technical issues.
- Excellent communicator adept at influencing, persuading, and building consensus and momentum toward a view point or approach.
- Superb leadership, team building, interpersonal, and time management skills. Able to generate trust and build alliances in the organization and with external partners.
- Skilled operating in an environment and culture that is undergoing a transformation. Able to create change and advance ideas; comfortable with ambiguity.
- High energy, results-oriented leader. Must be a self-starter with little supervision required. An individual with the utmost professional and personal integrity.
Requirements
- Bachelors degree or higher in related technical and business areas
- 4-6 years of technology experience and related management experience
- Understanding of project management methodologies and instruments, and a strong knowledge of the supporting technology architecture, and applicable processes.
- Additional requirements include strong knowledge of relevant applications and development of life cycles, general knowledge of professional services vendors, and tools and experience overseeing geographically distributed and culturally diverse work-groups.
- The successful candidate’s career may include tenure with both large and small organizations, and possibly consulting or professional services. It is important to understand or have been exposed to customary practices of nonprofit organizations so that this experience can benefit the organization.
- Strong influencing/negotiation skills, excellent written and verbal communication skills, knowledge of business and technology trends and strong interpersonal/relationship management skills.
- Knowledge or strong interest in LGBT workplace issues.
Physical Demands
- This position requires frequent computer use and occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds.
