And the Winner is...

Hosted by the hilarious Kate Clinton, last night's Out & Equal Workplace Awards presentation was a glittering and exciting night.

Even if Joan Rivers wasn't there to work the red carpet, we thought everyone looked fabulous!

Outie Award StatuetteThe evening started with the announcment of the 2006 Trailblazer Award winner, Emily Jones of Kodak. The Trailblazer Award is given in recognition of an LGBT person who has made a significant contribution to advance workplace equality. Jones was recognized for her work cofounding the Kodak Lambda Network and with numerous organizations including Out & Equal, HRC, UCLA and more.

Other nominees included Kevin Jones, Citigroup; Ken Hagenback, Hallmark; Daniel Forrest, Nike; and Terry Hildebrandt, Hewlett-Packard.

As dinner was served, gasps of delight and surprise greeted the reveal of the "surprise entertainment." The Three Waiters have performed over 4,000 shows in 55 countries, making opera an irreverant and funny treat.

Next up, the Champion Award was presented to Deborah Dagit of Merck. This award is given in recognition of a non-LGBT person who has played a pivotal role in championing equal treatment of LGBT employees on the job. Dagit has spent 15 years fighting for LGBT rights across three different companies and through involvement in organizations like the Gay Lesbian Straight Educators Network.

Dagit accepted the award and spoke of her cousin, Richard Kurt "Lion" Abel, who was lost to AIDS at a young age. " Whenever I am involved in LGBT advocacy efforts I think of Lion and ask his forgiveness that I was not able to help him more when our family rejected him," said Dagit. After listing a few of her accomplishments as a proud LGBT ally, she added, " it will never be enough. Nothing I can ever do will bring Richard the Lion-hearted back."

Other nominees included Hayward Bell, Raytheon; Maria Campbell, SC Johnson; and John Ferraro, Ernst & Young.

Starting and maintaining an effective and vibrant LGBT employee resource group is no easy task. The ERG of the Year Award was presented to Microsoft GLEAM, who effectively lobbied the corporation to include gender identity or expression in nondiscrimination policy, increased health benefit coverage for transgender employees, and convinced Microsoft to fully endorse antidiscrimination legislation across the U.S.

Additional nominees included Gays, Lesbians & Allies at Dow (GLAD); KP Pride at Kaiser Permanente; and Nike's Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender & Friends Network.

Next came the Significant Achievement Award, given in recognition of any employer that has made significant strides recently in advancing a fair and equitable workplace for its LGBT employees. This year's winner was PriceWaterhouseCooper, who has put a great deal of energy, money, and resources into developing LGBT equality. Recently, they lauched 10 LGBT employee resource groups, sponsored office-wide pride celebrations in 5 major markets, and beginning diversity training in all banches of service.

Accepting the award, Michael Lammons, a Partner from the Atlanta office of PriceWaterhousCooper, said that their company was interested in doing what was distinctive, not what was popular or easy, and that has led them to strive for greater diversity and inclusion.

Other nominees included Deutsche Bank, Kodak, and Raytheon.

The final award of the evening, the Workplace Excellence Award, was presented to JPMorganChase. The Workplace Excellence Award is given in recognition of any employer that has an historic and ongoing commitment to pursuing and executing workplace equality for LGBT employees in their own workplace. JPMorganChase has been consistently at the leading edge of LGBT equality efforts, scoring 100% on the HRC Corporate Equality Index, offering benefits parity, and demonstrating ongoing community support.

John Bradley accepted the award for JPMorganChase. " I’d like to challenge each one of us to use this Summit for real change," said Bradley. "Let’s return to our respective companies and ensure we set the bar high for progress, that we’re engaging our employee networking groups to help us truly push our agendas forward, that we’re doing whatever it takes to build a safe, inclusive workplace."

The other nominees were SC Johnson and Wells Fargo.

The night concluded with more entertainment from comedian Kate Clinton followed by dessert and dancing.

Out & Equal congratulates all the award winners and nominees.

Say Cheese!

Richard Florida
Plenary Speaker Richard Florida generated a great deal of discussion and stimulated the imagination when he spoke of the growing divide in our country, adding that many opponents to diversity are simply afraid. He challenged Summit attendees to realize that rather than reacting with frustration or anger, it's time for us to lead. Photo by Kodak.

Support Out & Equal Workplace Advocates

This weekend, we’ve mentioned that we’d like to encourage you to make a personal investment in Out & Equal Workplace Advocates. As much as we appreciate and honor our corporate sponsors and supporters, programs of Out & Equal are growing at exponential rates, and we could use your support.

Our Individual Giving program asks you to make a tax-deductible gift to support O&E’s many training, advocacy and research initiatives in the coming year. As the demand for more support and tools around workplace equality grows, Out & Equal is dedicating to meeting the needs of our evolving corporate community, and you can make a personal donation to support us.

We also encourage you to tell your friends, coworkers, and community members about Out & Equal Workplace Advocates. Help us spread the word so that we can shatter another attendance record in 2007!

It takes less than five minutes to make your donation, so what are you waiting for?
