On to the Capitol

The 2006 Out & Equal Workplace Summit came to a close yesterday with a bang. After a morning of exception workshops, plenary speaker Yolanda King, daughter of Martin Luther and Coretta Scott King, closed out the event with an inspiring and well-recieved presentation on civil rights and social activism.

With bittersweet emotions, we watched as 1,723 people (our largest turnout ever) packed up and prepared to head home. Bittersweet because we'll miss the cameraderie and fun, but full of hope for the influence and impact that will result from the ideas, training, and energy at the Summit.

King spoke at our closing plenary session, urging people not to be bystanders in the fight for equality, but to be active participants in the hard work. In the struggle, she said, we must not give up, must hold to "The Dream" and, when it comes to politicians, "we must work with them, and when necessary, we must work on them."

Perhaps her words were prophetic, as the 2006 co-chairs took to the stage one last time folowing her remarks to pass the torch to the 2007 Workplace Summit co-chairs.

The newly named co-chairs took to the stage to build excitement for next year's event (only 12 months away!) in the nation's capitol, Washington, D.C.

Washington D.C. will have a great deal to offer the Summit next year. As home to the country's largest employer (the federal government), over 300 LGBT associations, a thriving gay community (Dupont Circle is located just minutes from our 2007 host hotel), and a rich history of LGBT activism and milestones. You can officially save the dates September 27-29, 2007!

Out & Equal will begin planning for the next Summit almost immediately working to capture ideas and feedback resulting from this year. To that end, we encourage you to provide feedback about your experience by filling out the evaluation survey. We welcome additional comments and ideas by email.

We hope you enjoyed your experience with us in Chicago, and hope you'll be joining us again in Washington, D.C. next year.

Say Cheese!

Yolanda King

In discussing the movement for equality for all, Yolanda King, closing plenary speaker, said "I know in my heart that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word."

Speaking of the continued marriage, military and other forms of discrimination against LGBT people, she added "for a nation that prides itself on the words liberty and justice for all, this is unacceptable." Photo by Jere Keys.
